Yellowstone Blast: Visitors Scramble for Safety
Visitors had to run away when a big explosion happened at Yellowstone National Park. It shot up steam and pieces of rock into the air near Biscuit Basin. Videos show lots of people running as muddy grey stuff shot from the ground. The blast happened on Tuesday and damaged the boardwalk and benches nearby, but nobody got hurt.
The area near Old Faithful geyser got closed off by the National Parks Service. A photo from the US Geological Survey shows a big grey area where stuff got thrown out by the explosion.
The Survey explained that a hydrothermal explosion happens when water quickly turns into steam in a shallow underground system. This makes the rocks around it break apart as the steam expands. These explosions can be very strong, shooting out boiling water, steam, mud, and pieces of rock. Sometimes they go up to 1.2 miles high and make big holes. Most of what gets shot out is called breccia, which are sharp rocks stuck together with clay.
The Survey also warned that these explosions can be dangerous locally and can wreck thermal features. In Yellowstone, these explosions aren't from volcanoes. Similar explosions happened before in Biscuit Basin in 2009, 1991, and after an earthquake in 1959.
